Open almost any Google Business Profile that hasn't been actively managed, and you'll find the same pattern: a basic name and address, maybe a few photos, hours that haven't been checked in a year, and an empty services section. Google still shows the listing — it just doesn't show it as well as it could, and it converts far fewer searchers into customers than a fully built-out profile would.
This checklist covers every field that actually matters, in the order we work through it for every new client. None of it requires a developer, an agency retainer, or more than an hour of focused work.
The 12-Point Checklist
If you haven't completed Google's verification process (postcard, phone, or email depending on business type), do this first — every other change is far less effective on an unverified listing.
Pick the single most specific category available, not a broad catch-all. "Family Dentist" outperforms "Doctor" for almost every relevant search query.
Google allows multiple secondary categories — add every one that genuinely applies. Each category is effectively another door through which a search query can find you.
Use the full character limit available. Describe what you do, who you serve, and what makes the business distinct — naturally, without keyword stuffing.
An empty or sparse services section is one of the most common gaps we find. Each service listed with a short description gives Google — and the searcher — more reasons to match you to relevant queries.
Outdated hours are one of the fastest ways to lose a customer's trust before they even contact you. Set special hours for holidays and temporary closures as soon as dates are known.
Cover the storefront, interior, team, products, and work in progress. Profiles with more photos consistently receive more requests for directions and website clicks than thinly populated ones.
For businesses that travel to customers, list every city or region actually served — but avoid adding areas you don't genuinely serve, since this can dilute relevance signals.
Accessibility features, payment options, amenities, and identity attributes all help match your business to filtered searches — and most businesses leave this section mostly blank.
An active posting schedule signals an actively managed business. Offers, updates, and announcements all qualify and take only a few minutes each to publish.
Anyone can ask or answer questions on your profile, including competitors or pranksters. Pre-seed common questions with accurate answers and respond promptly to new ones.
Review recency matters as much as total volume. A profile with 80 reviews but none in the last six months reads as less active than one with 40 reviews, half of them recent.
Why This List Matters More Than It Looks
None of these twelve points are individually dramatic. The effect comes from completing all of them together. A profile that's 60% complete and a profile that's 100% complete can have a meaningfully different local ranking and click-through rate, even with an identical star rating and similar review count.
This is also exactly the foundation we lay before launching any review growth campaign for a client — sending customers to a half-finished profile wastes the effort of getting them there in the first place.
Photos, posts, and the Q&A section need ongoing attention, not a one-time fix. Set a recurring monthly reminder to add new photos and publish at least one post — profiles that go quiet for months tend to lose the ranking gains this checklist creates.

Most Google Business Profiles aren't broken — they're just unfinished. Working through this checklist once typically takes under an hour, and the businesses that maintain it consistently tend to outperform competitors with a similar rating but a thinner, less complete profile. Completeness is the part of local SEO you don't need an algorithm update or a bigger budget to control — you just need to finish the list.
- Profile completeness is fully within your control, unlike most other local ranking factors
- Services, photos, and attributes are the most commonly incomplete sections
- Recency of reviews and posts matters as much as total volume
- This entire checklist can be completed in under an hour for most businesses
